Hodgkin's disease presenting below the diaphragm. The experience of the Gruppo Italiano Studio Linfomi (GISL).
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Infradiaphragmatic Hodgkin's disease is rare, making up 5-12% of cases in clinical stages I and II; consequently, several questions concerning prognosis and treatment strategy remain to be answered. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical and prognostic characteristics and outcome of this condition. METHODS A series of 282 patients with CS I-II Hodgkin's dis...
متن کاملVasopressin during uncontrolled hemorrhagic shock: less bleeding below the diaphragm, more perfusion above.
I n 1990, about 5 million people died worldwide as a result of injury, and it seems likely that the global epidemic of deadly trauma is only beginning. By 2020, deaths from injury are expected to increase to 8 million worldwide (2), and 30% of these fatalities will be attributable to uncontrolled hemorrhagic shock (3). Resuscitation of patients in uncontrolled hemorrhagic shock remains one of t...
متن کاملEmperor penguin body surfaces cool below air temperature.
Emperor penguins Aptenodytes forsteri are able to survive the harsh Antarctic climate because of specialized anatomical, physiological and behavioural adaptations for minimizing heat loss. Heat transfer theory predicts that metabolic heat loss in this species will mostly depend on radiative and convective cooling. To examine this, thermal imaging of emperor penguins was undertaken at the breedi...
متن کاملGestational Diabetes and Preeclampsia in Association with Air Pollution at Levels below Current Air Quality Guidelines
BACKGROUND Several studies have estimated associations between air pollution and birth outcomes, but few have evaluated potential effects on pregnancy complications. OBJECTIVE We investigated whether low-level exposure to air pollution is associated with gestational diabetes and preeclampsia. METHODS High-quality registry information on 81,110 singleton pregnancy outcomes in southern Sweden...
متن کاملPathology-Proven Inguinal Node Metastasis from Papillary Thyroid Cancer in a Male without Disease below the Diaphragm.
We present the case of a 55-year-old white male with biopsy-proven left inguinal lymph node metastasis from differentiated papillary thyroid cancer. Inguinal node metastasis from papillary thyroid cancer is an extremely rare finding. The case demonstrates that papillary thyroid cancer is capable of metastasis presumably through the lymphatic system to unexpected locations.
